Navaneeth and Kathryn’s White Dress Wedding at the Fox

After Navaneeth and Kathryn’s Hindu ceremonies on Thursday, I thought there’s no way their Saturday event could compare.

I was right. There was no way to compare the two different days.

But, I was wrong thinking the Saturday event couldn’t live up to the beauty, camaraderie, and spirit of the Thursday event. The Fox Theater wedding was equally beautiful, filled with song and laughter, and the spirit of love.

Just received this email from Nav and Kathryn:

“Wow!! These are truly incredible. Can’t wait to see the rest, but wow!
— Kathryn and Nav

I'm an Atlanta wedding photographer who takes soulful, quirky and honest photos ...

I'm also an adventurous traveler and all-round nerd. I love to hike with my beagle/cattle dog Roux and best friend/spouse.

I was born in Atlanta, moved around a lot--30 cities and 5 states--and then came back.

After graduating from the Art Institute of Atlanta, I took a job at asmall newspaper in south Georgia, where I photographedhospital teas, pecan farmers, and beauty queens.

I photographed a biker funeral, death penalty protests andTed Bundy while interning with the Associated Press.

While a photographer for two dailies in Florida, I photographed Ronald Reagan, a train derailment and the dedication of a screened-in porch.

An unexpected life turn took me to Vermont where I fell in love with Bernie Sanders and on to Indiana, where I edited photos for a major daily, and nerded out getting a master’s and PhD.

After teaching photojournalism at colleges and universities in Florida, Indiana and Mississippi, I returned to Atlanta to earn myfifth degree--a Master's of Divinity.

My passion for storytelling with my camera and my interest in religious diversity led my to the field of wedding photojournalism.

I have documented weddings large and small, Unitarian and Pagan, indoors and out, Christian and Muslim, in backyards and in churches. The most exotic wedding I have photographed took place in Mexico and was officiated by aMayan shaman.

When I'm not photographing weddings, portraits or corporate events, I work on personal photo projects, visit friends in amemory-care home, and volunteer at a recovery center.

Nav and Kathryn’s Hindu wedding at the Hindu Temple of Riverdale proved to be a true celebration of love across cultures.

Emory Rollins School of Public Health AA Graduation 2021

Earlier this month students who had earned their Master of Anesthesiology gathered at Glenn Memorial Auditorium to celebrate their graduation.

The students began their degree program in person before COVID, moved to online classwork, then to clinical work and on to graduation. It’s not what they expected, but they learned more than they ever imagined.

Rangefinder Eye-Catching Photo of the Week

This morning, I was delighted to find an email from Jacqueline Tobin of Rangefinder magazine with a link to Nikki and Christian’s cake-cutting photograph on their website.

Each week Rangefinder editors publish a few “eye-catching portraits and photos of the week” that have caught their attention. Along with the photo, the magazine publishes the backstories about the way they were created.

You can find the backstory to this photo here.

Nav and Kathryn's Winn Park/High Museum Engagement Session

Nav and Kathryn say they’re “cut from the same cloth” and “bring out the best in each other.”

What more can you ask for in a life partner?

Knowing how Nav and Kathryn felt about each other, Kathryn’s family helped Nav set up a surprise engagement near a cabin in the mountains. “They set up a beautiful tent hidden in the woods with fake fur blankets on the ground, and lights strung along a path,” says Kathryn.

“Of course, I said ‘Yes’.”

When I met Navaneeth, I was immediately drawn to his unabashed laughter, his calm confidence, and of course, his man bun! Each day, I grow more in love with his kind thoughtfulness, how much he loves our cats, and his insatiable curiosity. I can’t wait to officially celebrate finding my soulmate.
— Kathryn
When I met Kathryn for the first time, it was like meeting an old friend I had lost touch with. I remember being distinctly aware of just how different our backgrounds were, but even more so of how right at home I felt. She was (and is) remarkably bright and lively, sassy as hell, kind beyond measure, and honest at all costs. She made it so unbelievably easy for me to be myself. I’m lucky to have met her, and can’t believe I get to spend the rest of my life with this wonderful human being.

John and Emily's Mineral Bluff Cabin Wedding

John and Emily planned a simple elopement near Mineral Bluff in the north Georgia mountains.

They wanted real photographs of them enjoying their wedding ceremony and the celebrations following. In addition, they requested one of those beautiful landscape photos where they would be small in the frame. (In the industry, those are known as “ant people” photos.)

I don’t take photographs like that very often, so I studied up on the way photographers who took those photos on a regular basis framed the images, and the way they posed the couples. When I arrived at the cabin, I realized that the best laid plans of mice and men often do not play out as planned. The cabin was perched on the side of the mountain and there was no way John and Emily could walk off into the distance and become tiny in the frame.

So, we had to settle for the silhouette above. The golden hour light on the mountains in the background made for a fine landscape backdrop for the image.

Second Set of Porch Portraits Showing at the Tennis Gallery

Pine Lake Portrait Photographer

The second of porch portraits from Pine Lake are now hanging in the tennis court on the corner of Lakeshore and Park in Pine Lake.

I began the porch portrait project on April 6, 2020 as folks were beginning to feel the isolation of quarantine. The project was a way for me to stay sane during quarantine and a way to spread a little cheer.

Portrait Photographer in Pine Lake

Little did I know when I took the first few photos that the series would result in a book and an outdoor art installation.

Thanks to Mayor Hammet, the city of Pine Lake, the Pine Lake Municipal Arts Council, Digital Arts Studio and the many friends and family who donated to support the outdoor art installation.

True Love Contest WPJA Awards 2021

When the folks at the Wedding Photojournalist Association noticed how much the wedding photography market was slowing due to COVID, they created the True Love Awards for photographs taken in years past. They write, “While we eagerly await the right conditions to reopen our regular wedding photography contests, we are committed to giving WPJA members something to tide them over, namely a new contest celebrating l’amour.”

Only photographs from the current year are eligible for the regular documentary and artistic categories. But, the number of photographs each photographer had to choose from for 2020 had dropped significantly, so it seemed natural to allow photographers to pour through photographs from previous years to submit to this newly formed contest.

The call for entries reads like this, “We want images illustrating true love and emotion that were shot from your heart. The outpouring of love that you captured can be between two people or even among a group of family and friends expressing their mutual affection, admiration, and devotion.”

It’s always good to be given a challenge that asks you to look back at your work.

Here are a couple of TLC winners from the True Love Contest in 2021.
